mission statement

Earth Designs Cooperative is a landscape and garden design company that specializes in grounds and project management, design of hard and soft scapes, installation of gardens – both ornamental and edible, meadows and no mow lawns, natural screening, and custom stone work. Our vision is to foster meaningful connections between people and plants through the creation of unique installations, woodland plantings, native meadows, and vegetable and medicinal gardens. Our work is infused with sustainable, eco-friendly and organic methods; we strive to care for every property and each plant with loving respect, maintaining the idea that creating a more sustainable planet rests in the hands of each of us doing our part. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our work with the land and into our business structure. As a worker cooperative, we are making strides toward social change by securing financial equity and civic engagement for each of our worker-owners and directing our company toward creating a socially and environmentally conscious future. The worker cooperative model supports and strengthens the business, its workers, and the community, by creating fulfilling and financially sustainable jobs that inspire worker-owners to be invested in their work and socially & financially able to engage deeply with their community.

  what is a cooperative?

IMG_3067 adj A worker cooperative is a business that is owned, managed, and governed by its employees. As worker-owners, employees participate in the oversight, direction, and profits of the business in a democratic manner. At EDC, our Board of Directors is composed of 4-6 worker-owners and one Independent Director who does not work for EDC, all of whom are voted in by the Members. The Board oversees the management team and makes decisions on behalf of all of the worker-owners, regarding the future of the company in a democratic manner. IMG_2581 adjAt EDC, our conversion to a worker coop was inspired by a desire to support (and retain) our employees through increased financial gains & the sense of purpose that comes with ownership responsibility. We strive to create meaningful social & economic change through modeling a business structure that bolsters each of us individually & collectively, rather than encouraging overly competitive standards. As a small company, this system allows us to delegate responsibility into different departments within our realm of gardening work, improving communication with clients and within the EDC team (management & crew), which serves to create a more intimate connection to the land we maintain and the mission of our work.
